At 60 Miles An Hour (Rolls-Royce advertisement, 1958-1962)

At sixty miles an hour, the headline says, the loudest noise in the new Rolls-Royce is the electric clock. A buyer can picture that and test it, and the advertisement never has to use the word quiet. David Ogilvy wrote it after winning the Rolls-Royce account in 1957, and it ran from 1958 to 1962.

Its origin is disputed. Ogilvy said the sentence came from a motoring magazine's road test. An advertisement for Pierce-Arrow had made nearly the same claim about an electric clock in 1933, and a BBDO executive reportedly wrote to him about the resemblance. Ogilvy kept to his account, so the record holds a letter and a denial and no ruling.
