On Sunday, 6 July 1969, NASA released the Apollo 11 Press Kit with the note "FOR RELEASE: SUNDAY JULY 6, 1969 (To be launched no earlier than July 16)." The opening describes the mission: "The United States will launch a three-man space craft toward the Moon on July 16 with the goal of landing two astronaut explorers on the lunar surface four days later." The kit includes sections on spacecraft design criteria, crew biographical information, scientific experiments, recovery procedures, and contingency planning. Neil Armstrong, 38, of Wapakoneta, Ohio is named as the first lunar explorer, though this assignment had not been publicly confirmed until 5 July. The document was a physical distribution artifact—printed copies sent to news organizations—capturing a moment when NASA coordinated media access through paper rather than digital feeds.
